Yesterday we announced a fairly radical shift in our communication strategy for our church: we’re no longer providing a weekly bulletin. Instead, we’re going to 100% electronic means of communication, led by our creative URL that redirects to the news and events page in our website:
There were a ton of factors that went into this decision, the two biggest of which are an effort to go green by not wasting paper every week, and saving green on printing and design costs.
We’re still providing important updates through our website, our weekly e-newsletter, during life groups, and from the pulpit on Sunday mornings. Our hope is that people will be more engaged and attentive to announcements, and that we’ll be more concise and deliberate in the activities we choose to announce.
We know this may ruffle some feathers, or “offend the mind” as one of my friends said, but we’re not content to do things the way they’ve always been done, just for the sake of doing them. We want to be the best stewards of our finances and time, and we believe this is a step in that direction.
What do you think? If you’re in our church, was this a good idea? If you’re outside of our church family, do you wish you church would do something like this, or are you just waiting for us to go down in flames?
This post is my contribution to Creative Chaos…

Great idea. I think it’s smart to save money and paper.
I would quickly scan over then and then they would basically be tossed. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

I wonder how much paper/money would be saved if every church in America did this? I bet it would be a staggering amount.

Awesome, I second the Mabry’s comment. I’m jealous.

Works for me. I never got a bulliten, anyway because I always get to church before they start handing them out and I could never remember to go get one later.
I know a lot of people that get the weekly emails that don’t bother reading them. But most of those are people that don’t care to really participate in church activities. So if those folks aren’t informed, who cares?! They weren’t going to come anyway…
The info is out there. Those that want to be informed and involved can find it.

We stopped doing bulletins about 3 weeks ago. So far, we’ve gotten some pushback from “traditionalists”, but everyone else has adopted to our “news” site.
In addition to money/enviromental benefits, it also frees up one of our staff people for “x” number of hours per week.
Keep us posted on how the transition goes.

@ChadWright- I believe our saving are around $2000 a month. We can use that money for the kingdom in much better places.
@portorikan and @Donnyfisher- There might be, but I know very little about Joomla. If you, or anyone else, knows more please contact me!
@jenherrick- There is something to be said for people taking info for granted when it’s all over the place, but it becomes much more valuable when you have to go get it.
@natedavidscott- Thanks. If not for my wife, I’d own roughly 345,679 URLs. I just sit and search for them when an idea comes to mind!

This was a good decision. They could even be put on the screen during the service when the announcements are being given and if someone wants to make a note of it they can.

That’s pretty cool idea. I wish our church would do that. But then again. They dont have the best website. Its just bare bones type of deal.
But on the other hand.. I agree with Brad. haha

Not only does a bulletin waste money, paper, supplies, yada yada yada…but it wastes our most precious and seemingly sparse resource…TIME.

Why couldn’t we come up with this idea when I worked at the church and slaved over the bulletin every week!

I was wondering where the pro-bulletin crowd was but then I thought to myself, they probably don’t spend a lot of time on blogs or internet related activities in the first place!

I agree with Brad Ruggles, I’m not sure we can reach people if we don’t have a bulletin.
But the worst part is and I might have to go find another church because of this. What about all those restaurants that give you 10% off if you bring in your church bulletin, I mean good grief does our church ever think about saving us money, I could tithe more, but no I have to give it all to the restaurants because I don’t get my stinking discount anymore.
What’s next going from pews to chairs?
Are they gonna put up one of those devilish movie screens in our church and get a projector.
If they change the color of the carpet, that will be my last straw.
If I hear one more reference to any movie made or one of those secular songs in a sermon, I’m done.
If they replace the organ, I’m outta here. We can’t play that devil’s music with those kids and their electric guitars. That rock ‘n roll and that rap music is just terrible.

I can deal with the electric guitars and hippity hoppity music, but no discount?
I dunno…

Shhh…I’ve been rooting for this at our church for a looooong time. (Still no go.) I think the concern is what would people use to play tic-tac-toe on during the sermon?

We’ve talked about this ever since we saw it happen at Buckhead. I’m hoping that this actually takes off and churches start doing this…and people actually start using the online resources.
It would be so much easier and cheaper if everyone jumps on board.

Some churches that meet in rented facilities like movie theaters feel the need to use bulletins to hold the giving envelopes. Can you imagine coming to church for the first time and the usher gives you a giving envelope only? There is no seat back in front of you to store these. Bulletin becomes a necessary evil.
